Moringa is introduced in the Ayurveda (the world’s oldest traditional medicine) as an effective plant that can prevent hundreds of diseases. Moringa thrives in warm temperature and grows wildly in countries such as the Philippines, India, and other nations in Africa, South America and South east Asia. In Japan, people have moved and begun to culture moringa in Okinawa (main island of Okinawa, Miyakojima island and Ishigakishima island), Kagoshima and Kumamoto about 10 years ago.
Moringa is rich in nutritional components and is considered as “the highest nutritional edible plant that ever existed on the earth”. The moringa leaves contain over 90 kinds of rich nutrients such as many types of minerals, amino acids, GABA, vitamins and polyphenol. They are also called “green milk” and “green protein”.
Recently, WHO focused on the utility value of this plant. The “Nutrition Project”, which is focused on poor African communities, used moringa to promote supplies in nutrition and water for drinking, and it drew people’s attention because it significantly improved the health of suffering children, cutting their symptoms and alleviating their conditions.
Moringa products for intestinal functions and intestinal environment are now selling well. In the domestic health foods market, classic items of finished products containing moringa come in the form of supplements and teas. Nowadays, some companies create products, putting moringa into Aojiru and smoothies. Major companies are trying to use moringa and it led to consumers knowing more and more about the plant. There are now various ways wherein moringa is presented, such as putting moringa in sweets, noodles, distilled spirits and highball. The size of the market is expected to increase.
