According to a consumer awareness survey conducted by a private research company, more than 50% of the population have heard the word “saccharification” and is gradually understanding the importance of saccharification measures. Last May, the first Foods with Function Claims (FFC) product to reduce saccharification stress was accepted, and this has drawn a lot of attention in the industry. Nippon Shinyaku Co., Ltd. submitted the said FFC product, and the functional ingredient is rhodanthenone B, which can be found in mangosteens. The claim says, “It helps reduce saccharification stress and helps keep skin moist”. Now, four more products with similar claims have been accepted, and the number of such FFCs has been increasing.
Concerning functionality, it is scientifically proven that rhodanthenone B decreases pentosidine concentration, which is one of AGEs (Advanced Glycation End Products) in the blood. Suppressing the generation of AGEs can keep skin moist. It had been pointed out that it was difficult for consumers to understand antiglycation because of the complexity of the concept of saccharification and because of the diversification of measures for saccharification stress. However, after the FFC product related to saccharification was accepted, the industry now expects consumers to learn and truly understand saccharification.
Saccharification is Aging: Importance of the Measures are Defined
Saccharification is called glycation. The understanding of this process was pioneered by the French, Louis Maillard, who conducted a research on the food browning reaction (the phenomenon that when sugar and amino acid turn brown when they come together and are heated). Thus, this browning phenomenon was called “Maillard Reaction”, in honour of Louis Maillard. As the Maillard Reaction takes place, AGEs are created. AGEs are fluorescent, brown and a cross-linking between proteins, and when they accumulate in the body, pathological aging accelerates.
The accumulation of AGEs in the body leads to skin aging, making the skin yellow-dull and decreased skin elasticity. It also affects the blood, bone and brain, and could heighten the risks to cause diabetic complications, such as arteriosclerosis, diabetic vascular disorder, osteoporosis, retinopathy and nephropathy. Saccharification measures are recognized as very important from the point of view of lifestyle-related disease countermeasures and could help promote a long and healthy life. The Glycation Stress Research Center at Life and Medical Science Department of Doshisha University said that they have found an easy way to incorporate measures to saccharification stress in one’s daily life, along with FFC products and cosmetics that contain anti-glycation ingredients. The Research Center also said that for more people to know about this, in addition to releasing proper information from universities, research institutes and mass media, manufacturers need to create an environment where general consumers could get antiglycation ingredients and products. Understanding this key statement, “saccharification is aging”, could lead to the healthy and youthful life.
